When drawing a lewis structure with an expanded octet where there are additional lone pairs around the central atom, is the spacing important? For example question 3.65 asks you to draw the Lewis Structure for XeF4. There are 36 e- between these atoms, so when you draw the lewis structure there will be two lone pairs around Xe in addition to the filled octets. The solutions manual depicts this with the general shape of the molecule with the two F's closer to each other on each side of the Xe, and the two lone pairs on top and below the Xe, but would it still be correct if I drew the molecule so that the F's were all 90 degree angles, and just put the two lone pairs between two of them?
I don't think this matters for test 3, but when we get more into the different structures, there are rules for this kind of thing, based on which repulsion is greatest.
