Writing Chemical Formulas- HW Question 3.25

For example, 3.25 A asks to write the chemical formula for magensium arsenide.

For this, how exactly does one go about solving it. Do I look at the individual elements charge separately at first and then balance them? I'm pretty confused.

Mg commonly forms +2 ions since it has 2 valence e-, and Arsenic has 5 valence e-, so it needs 3 to fill its shell, according to the octet rule. So both elements' needs are met, use 3 Mg and 2AS to make As2Mg3!

For these types of questions, I like to think of them as like balancing chemical equations. Explained above, there are a certain number of electrons needed to complete each octet. By recognizing this, you can multiply to find the formula. Hope this helps!
