Central Atom(s)

Postby OrAmar-1L » Wed May 30, 2018 3:44 pm

How would I know what the central atom or atoms should be in my Lewis structure for a compound?

Usually the least electronegative atom is the central atom, but hydrogen is never the central atom.

To add on, there are a few compounds that the central atom isn't the least electronegative because the formal charges are best that way.

The least electronegative atom would go in the center but Hydrogen I know for sure can never be the center atom.

The central atom would be the atom that has the least amount of ionization energy because the atom is more likely to bond with an atom that takes little effort to remove the electron from the atom based on Lavelle's lecture.

I hope this helps. Please correct me if my explanation is wrong in certain places.

It is always the atom that is least electronegative

The central atom in a Lewis Structure is usually the least electronegative atom, with the exception to hydrogen:
