General Q on Lewis Structures

Postby Anand Narayan 1G » Sun Oct 28, 2018 9:44 pm

Is there a difference between using a line to represent bonds rather than 2 dots? Is there a chemical difference?

A line is used to show a chemical bond, or that two atoms are "sharing" electrons. Putting two dots in between two atoms that are sharing it would mean the same thing. However, when showing the lewis structure of just one atom, using a line wouldn't really make sense since its not bound to anything. I think thats the difference.

No, there isn't a difference. I think lines are easier to read in a lewis drawing and make it more easy to understand that there is a bond, that way the dots can represent nonbonding electrons more easily.
