Lewis Structures
How did Professor Lavelle say to choose the atom that belongs in the center of the Lewis Structure?

Re: Lewis Structures
Hello, Dr. Lavelle mentioned in his lecture to choose the atom with the lowest ionization energy as the central atom.

Re: Lewis Structures
Can every atom have potentially 8 electrons in the Lewis Structure besides H and He?

Re: Lewis Structures
Choose the atom with the lowest ionization energy to be the central atom; hence, hydrogen is never a central atom.

Re: Lewis Structures
The central atom is generally the atom with the lowest ionization energy, which is usually furthest away from row 17 (bc atoms in row 17 typically have the highest ionization energy)

Re: Lewis Structures
The atom with the lowest ionization energy level. Also H can never go in the middle.
Re: Lewis Structures
Basically the atom with the lowest ionization energy since these atoms are the most likely to give up or share their electrons.

Re: Lewis Structures
Dr. Lavelle also mentioned Li and Be in addition to H and He as never fulfilling the octet rule

Re: Lewis Structures
The atom with the lowest ionization level is at the center of the Lewis structure. These are usually the ones on the left of the periodic table.

Re: Lewis Structures
The center atom is most likely the one with the lowest ionization/electronization energy.

Re: Lewis Structures
You put the one with lowest ionization level, but there are also some tricks that you can remember.
1) HS- hydrogen won’t be in the middle S will( hydrogen is never in the middle!)
2) CHO
Carbon is in the middle here (lower)
