Number of Electrons

Postby Nicole Garrido 2I » Mon Oct 29, 2018 8:20 pm

Is the number of valence electrons based on the column the element is in? Is the proton number same as the total number of electrons?

The number of protons is the same as the number of electrons if the atom is neutral and not charged. The number of valence electrons is based off of the group number the element is in.

to find the number of valence electrons you count across the period the s and p elements including the element you are looking at. You cant only look at the column numbers because for example carbon is in the 14th column but only has 4 valence electrons
