Lewis Structures and adding multiple bonds

Postby josephyim1L » Wed Oct 31, 2018 5:08 pm

The textbook doesn't do a very good job of showing how to determine if a double bond should be added, can someone clarify how to know if a double bond or triple bond should be added for a Lewis structure?

Is your question more specifically about cases where compounds are stable on their own without the double/triple bonds?

you will know whether you'll need to add a double or triple bond depending if it changes the formal charge closer to 0. this means the atom will be more stable
