In the solution, Br has 10 valence electrons. Is this an exception to the octet rule? I thought it only applied to elements in the third period (P, Cl, S)?

Beryllium does not follow the octet rule because it doesn't require eight electrons surrounding it to be stable. Since beryllium is in the second group, it only has two valence electrons, which means it can only form two bonds. I believe it has 10 valence electrons in this specific problem, because the molecule calls for more electrons with the total number of them equaling a larger amount.
