Do brackets go over cations or anions or either or both?

Is there even a specific guideline or it doesn't really matter?

I am referring to [ ] these brackets. For example which is more correct?
[Na] Cl or Na [Cl] or [Na] [Cl] ? (Add charges and dots for electrons)

I'm not too sure about if there is a correct way of doing it, but I usually put brackets around both ions when drawing the Lewis structures.

I think you put them on both cations and anions

I believe you put them on both the cation and anion to show how they are charged. []- and []+
