Formal Charges

Postby Abby De La Merced 3F » Fri Nov 02, 2018 10:08 pm

Im sorry this might be a dumb question, but when we are writing out the Lewis structures, I know that we write the least electronegative atom in the center, but when we write the atoms on the outside does it matter where they go when we are trying to find their formal charges?

I believe it does not matter. However, it will matter when we start focusing on the geometric structure of atoms rather than their formal charges.

The location of the outside atoms should not matter.
