How do I draw Lewis structures of polyatomic species?

1. count total number of electrons
2. put element with lowest IE in the center
3. arrange electrons symmetrically around central atom
4. draw resonance if applicable

It's also important to look at the formal charges of each element in order to figure out the most likely bonding.
