Exceptions to the Octet Rule

Postby Claire Guo 1B » Sun Nov 04, 2018 3:36 pm

What are some examples of elements in compounds that exemplify exceptions to the octet rule and the reasons behind them?

Exceptions to the octet rule are atoms like, phosphorus, Sulfur, and Chlorine, this is because these elements have the d-orbital.

Looking at it through the hybridization lens, any atom past the 2p orbital can be an exception to the octet rule because the orbitals become degenerate.

Atoms in period 3 or higher are exceptions to the octet rule because they have d-orbitals which can accommodate more electrons.

Any atom in the 3 orbital or lower can have an expanded octet. It is very common to see it on S, P, and Cl. A good example is PCl5. Phosphorus has an expanded octet with all 5 chlorine’s bonded to it.
