ONF

Postby Samantha Chung 4I » Mon Nov 05, 2018 9:06 am

For ONF, we are supposed to draw the central element as the element with the least ionization energy. In this case this would be oxygen as N and O are exceptions in the periodic trend. However, in the lewis structure of ONF, the nitrogen is the one at the center?

The central element for the Lewis structure of ONF should be the atom with the lowest electronegativity, which in this case is nitrogen.

I think this is just an exception. Nitrogen is in the center because that gives the lowest formal charges of all three atoms.
