Molecular shape and structure

Postby Ramsha Dis1B » Sat Nov 10, 2018 12:06 am

When we draw the lewis structure for molecules that have 4 or more atoms do we have to show the 3D shape by putting a small triangle and the lines to show that one atom is behind or in front of the central atom?

Not for lewis structure

no those are for VSPER models.
Lewis structures is a 2D structure that depicts the lone pair electrons that may exist in a molecule

You would need to do that when drawing a VSEPR, but I think Professor Lavelle also said that when drawing a VSEPR, simply writing/stating what kind of shape the structure is in (ie trigonal planar, linear, etc) will also suffice.

You only need to indicate shape in VSEPR models, and even then it is not necessary to depict a 3D drawing of the structure. Simply naming the shape (trigonal planar, linear, etc) will suffice.

The question will indicate if it wants you to draw the VSEPR model or lewis structure it just depends
