VSEPR Model

What is the significance of using a VSEPR model? Do we mainly use them to determine the shape and angle degree of molecules?

The purpose of the VSEPR Model is to determine the arrangments of the electrons pairs around non-hydrogen atoms. It also helps predict the structure of almost any molecule or polyatomic ion in which the middle atom is a nonmetal.

Before, we have just been placing the atoms equally distant from the central atom, but that is not always correct. The VESPR model emphasizes electron repulsion and thus helps us determine what the experimentally observed structure of a molecule is.

VSEPR stands for Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion, which should give you an idea of what the theory is for. The principle idea behind this theory is that electron pairs around a central atom will assume a position that keeps them as far apart from each other, as electron pairs and bonds repel one another. After drawing the Lewis structure of the molecule and figuring out the steric number, you should be able to use the VSEPR theory to determine the shape of and bond angles in the molecule.

I don't think we'll be given the bond angles or shape names in the tests though, so we'd have to remember those.

from the previous learning, we actually did not really how the molecules look like or its shape; the resonance and the double or more bond we learn actually does not have any effect for the shape. so from the vsepr model, we should learn the practical model
