Boron Trifluoride

Postby Adrienne_4F » Wed Nov 14, 2018 4:24 pm

In our notes from October 31st, we drew boron trifluoride, but boron only has 6 electrons, why? Don't all elements need 8 electrons?

I believe Boron is an exception to the octet rule! Just something to memorize:)

Yes boron is one of the elements that is part of the exception.

That's why it's shape is trigonal planar.

B, Be, Li, H all exceptions to octet rule because they don't complete valence shell

Boron is one of the examples of elements that can have expanded octects. Also those that are 2p and lower can have expanded octects.

Boron is an exception to the octet rule, just like any other element in group 13 such as Aluminum.

Boron is one of the element exceptions that do not follow the octet rule. It is between the element carbon (which is the first element by increasing atomic number that requires a full octet) and beryllium (an element that does not follow the octet rule). Therefore, it also doesn't require an octet.
