Exceptions to the Octet Rule

Postby Aj1156 » Sun Nov 25, 2018 10:42 am

What are the exceptions to the Octet rule that we need to be aware of?

Period 3 elements can be an exception to the octet rule because they are able to use their d orbital for bonding. H, He, Li, Be, and B are also exceptions because they are more likely to lose their electrons than to accept more.

H, He, Li, Be, and B can have less than an octet (an incomplete octet)
and any element in period 3 or below can have more than an octet (expanded octet) because they can use the empty d orbital, as mentioned above.

Period 3 and above elements can have expanded octets, as well the first four elements, H, He, Li, and Be will try to have 2 e- to finish the first shell rather the 8 e- as it is easier to be stable in this way.

(1) molecules, such as NO, with an odd number of electrons; (2) molecules in which one or more atoms possess more than eight electrons, such as SF6; and (3) molecules such as BCl3, in which one or more atoms possess less than eight electrons.

Elements that are in period three can have what is called an expanded octet in that they can go beyond the octet rule and have greater than it.
