Lewis Structure of CO

Lewis Structure of CO
I understand that the CO bond is a triple bond, but I was curious why the Lewis structure can't be written as a double bond? I was able to write it as a double bond with no charges on either atom. Nonetheless, the CO triple bond lewis structure is preferred although it results in charges of +1 and -1 on the atoms. Why is this?

Using a double bond I assume carbon had more than 4 lone pair e- around the carbon if I am not mistaken. Along with the double bond the FC would be -2. This would not be preferred.

If C and O were double bonded, the FC of C would be -2 and the FC of O would be 0, adding up to a total charge of -2. When C and O are triple bonded however, the FC of C is -1 and the FC of O is 1, which add up to a charge of 0, which is a more stable structure.

Ya you can't have the greater formal charge distributed along the less electronegative atom.
