Midterm Prep - Fall 2012 question 5 B. in course reader

Postby Mara Lockhart 3J » Sat Nov 08, 2014 11:01 pm

For question 5 B. in the Fall 2012 course reader midterm prep, we are asked to determine which gases can contribute to global warming by writing the Lewis structures. For (a)CO, I wrote it with 0 formal charges, making it so it would not contribute to global warming, however the course reader has the answer with a formal charge of -1 on the C and +1 on the O, which would then make it contribute to global warming. Why would you not want to make the formal charges 0?

Hi,
In the Lewis Structure that has a lower formal charge, carbon doesn't have a complete octet. Carbon needs to have a complete octet, therefore you use the second Lewis Structure with a triple bond.
