Ion lewis structure

Postby annikaying » Wed Oct 23, 2019 4:15 pm

When drawing a lewis dot structure does it matter where in the molecule you put the added e ? For example when you have BrO- does it matter where that extra electron is added into the structure?

No it does not. As long as you end up having the correct number of electrons in the end.

It doesn't matter but in the end the ion should have a full shell of valence electrons (8 dots/bonds).

Is there any case where the atoms lewis structure doesn’t have a full octet?

I also was wondering about this question? Are there any exceptions to the rules that we should memorize?

Yes, there are a few exceptions to the octet rule. This includes molecules with an odd number of electrons (ex. nitrogen), molecules with atoms that have more than 8 electrons (ex. sulfur), and molecules with atoms that have less than 8 electrons (ex. boron).

no it does not matter but the ion should have 8 "dots" unless ofc it doesn't need the full 8

It doesn't matter, just make sure you have the right amount of them.

As long as you follow the octet rule (besides any exceptions), then it wouldn't matter where the additional electron is since you'll have satisfied the octet rule for every atom. For your example of BrO-, just make sure that you have the right amount of electrons. So, count out the valence electrons for each and then add the additional electron for the net negative charge. Adding those up should get you the total needed in order to satisfy the octet rule and complete the Lewis structure.

I don't think it matters, as long as you follow the octet rule and put the bracket and the ion's respective charge around the lewis structure.
