Anion/Cations

Postby 205154661_Dis2J » Sun Oct 27, 2019 2:25 pm

How exactly would I represent anions and cations in Lewis structures? Would these be implied by removing an electron from the Lewis structure if it is cation and adding an electron if it is an anion?

Traditionally, a Lewis structure of a cation or an anion will be put in brackets and the charge will be placed in the top right corner outside the bracket. For example, sulfate will have a 2- charge written outside the bracket surrounding the Lewis structure to indicate that the structure is not neutral.

Adding on to what the post above me said, I believe Usually it is denoted by brackets and then the charge is placed at the top right corner. If it has a 2+ charge then its be a cation and vice versa.
