Can someone explain why we separate the different elements or molecules when drawing the lewis structure?

When drawing the lewis structures for ions, you need to separate the ions in order to denote their charge. So for the first problem, NH4 is a cation, while Cl is an anion. To write that they are different charge, you need to separate them in the lewis structure with a bracket and a charge number with them right next to one another.

This problem uses polyatomic ions, so it's important to show the distinction between a covalently bonded molecule, and an ionically bonded molecule.
