how to know which elements bonds to which?

For unfamiliar structures, how do we know which atoms are attached to which atoms? For example, for H2CSO, why is oxygen attached to sulfur and not to carbon?

This probably isn't an official rule, but it's often easiest to think that the atoms are attached in order as presented by the name of the molecule or compound. For example, by looking at H2CSO, you can assume that 2 hydrogen atoms will be attached to C, which is attached to the S atom, which is attached to the O atom.

The atom will bond such that formal charges for each atom are closest to zero and each octet is satisfied.

The most important thing to remember is that each Lewis structure is a puzzle that doesn't have "wrong" answers, just ones that are more right than others. (Take this with a grain of salt though).

In general, the central atom would be the one with the lower ionization energy. In class, Dr. Lavelle also mentioned that because H can only form one bond, it will never be the central atom.
