Exceptions to the Octet Rule

How do you know if an element can exceed the octet rule?

One exception is if the element is in the p-block in Period 3 or below, since those have the option to move electrons into the d-block.

In addition, the first four elements (H, He, Li, and Be) are usually exceptions to the octet rule because there are only 2 electrons is the first subshell.

Elements P, Cl, and S do not adhere to the octet rule because of the d orbital.
