Valence electrons just refer to the electrons at the outermost shell. It increases down the group.

Valence electrons increase by 1 as you go from left to right on the periodic table. So it goes from 1 such as Li to 8 such as Ne.

The trends for valence electrons are as follows: in a period, the number of valence electrons increases as we move from left to right side and in a group, the number of valence electrons remains the same.
