Expanded Shells

Postby Jessica Esparza 2H » Fri Nov 01, 2019 9:22 pm

I understand the concept of why certain elements after period 3 can have expanded shells but what is the maximum number for these elements? And as a follow-up, how do you know it's that maximum number? Thank you!

Well d-subshells can hold 10 electrons, so I guess 18 could be the max? I don't think we need to worry about a max because we won't ever get to that point.

Yeah, it becomes the 18-electron rule to reach a noble gas configuration
