ONF lewis structure

Postby Eugene Chung 3F » Sat Nov 02, 2019 7:59 pm

Since the general guideline for determining the central atom is to choose the one with lowest ionization energy, I expected O to be the central atom. However, the solution provides N as central. Could anyone explain to me why?

it is not the element with the least ionization energy that goes in the middle, it is the element with the least electronegativity which is quite different. So based on that, you can now assume that the N should go in the middel because out of the elements given it is the one with the least electronegativity(sometimes though, they will tell you which element they want in the middle.

Right it goes by which atom has the lowest electronegativity which defines how well at atom takes and accepts an electron and the trend goes from top to bottom and left to right.
