More stable structures

Postby WUng_1D » Sun Nov 03, 2019 4:56 pm

I know that the most ideal structures are the ones with minimal formal charges. How do I recognize if there is a more stable structure while drawing the lewis structures. Additionally if asked to draw a lewis structure, would I get points marked off if I don't draw the most stable one.

I'm pretty sure the stability of a Lewis structure is based off of formal charge and which atoms have what formal charges. Typically, the more electronegative atoms rather have a negative formal charge than less electronegative atoms.

I think the question on the exam may make it clear whether it wants multiple versions. For example if it is talking about resonance or if it says "make the lowest energy structure". Some lewis structure have the same formal charge when changed and others are variable. I think when you are drawing it, look if double bonds can go anywhere else etc. to see if another version exists.
