A resonance structure is a possible way of drawing the distribution of electrons around a compound. However, in such drawings, none of them represent the actual distribution. That actual distribution can be described as a resonance hybrid, in which the bond length between a central atom to neighboring atoms is actually an average of all the bond lengths shown in the resonance structure.
