This is more of a concern for tests – do we have to show work when calculating valence electrons? Will Dr. Lavelle care if we just write down the number of valence electrons when trying to determine the Lewis structure of a molecule?
Thanks!

Re: Showing work for valence electrons
It may just be helpful to quickly show the addition of valence electrons to show the calculation for the total number of valence electrons. It will help you keep track and also make it easier for the grader.

Yes my TA recommended that we show important work so that if we make a mistake along the way, he'd be able to see if the wrong answer came from us simply not knowing the correct steps or if we just made a mistake but were headd in the right direction.

Re: Showing work for valence electrons
For each atom I don't think you need to show how you counted them, i.e. S subshell + P subshell,
But for the total number of Valance electrons in the molecule for Formal Charge you should show a quick addition of all the atoms. This will also help you not make mistakes.
