Homework 2C3

Postby Dakota Walker 1L » Mon Nov 04, 2019 3:56 pm

This problem asks you to draw lewis structures for:
a) periodate ion, b) hydrogen phosphate ion, c) chloric acid etc.

I was wondering if we need to know what a "periodate ion" is for our midterm/final or if the IO4- would be given?

When I asked an undergraduate assistant about this, they said that typically the chemical formula would be given, and on the rare occasion you get a question where the name is given and the formula is not, it will either be a very common compound or it will be obvious from the name. For example, phosphorus pentachloride is PCl5 (penta=5 mol Cl).

Some common molecular formulas to be aware of are things like water (H2O), table salt (NaCl), ammonia (NH3), etc....

Here is a good quizlet to help memorize some basic ones if you are worried: https://quizlet.com/_3rd3b
