lewis structure homework help

Postby curry 1E » Tue Nov 05, 2019 8:00 am

"Draw the Lewis structure, including typical contributions to the resonance structure (where appropriate, allow for the possibil-ity of octet expansion, including double bonds in different posi-tions), for (a) periodate ion; (b) hydrogen phosphate ion; (c) chloric acid; (d) arsenate ion"
Can someone help me with this one?
And are we supposed to memorize each ion and what compound it makes?

I don't think we'll have to know nomenclature until later when we'll actually be taught it! I just looked up the chemical formula for each ion and then drew the structures. As for the problem itself, halogens can expand their octet, meaning they don't necessarily form only 4 bonds. If they have 7 valence electrons, they can form 5 bonds + 1 lone pair, or even more if they have an extra electron (since it's an ion). Hope that helps!

So just to clarify, memorizing these specific ions is not something that we should place at the forefront when studying for this midterm?
