beyond period 3. common ones include sulfur, phosphorous, silicon and chlorine

The ones you probably need to know for this class would be sulfur, phosphorus, chlorine, and silicon because their electrons expand into the 3d orbital.

When n is greater than or equal to 3 and the element is in the p block, an expanded octet is possible. This is possible because of the presence of the d sublevel.
