How do you know when a compound is radical and which atom will have the unpaired electrons?

Radicals have an uneven number of electrons.
Do you mean the single electron instead of unpaired electron for the second question?

Radicals have an odd number of electrons, and the more electronegative atom will not have the unpaired electron
