Organic Compounds

Postby Savannah Mance 4G » Mon Nov 18, 2019 10:43 pm

How do you draw lewis structures for complex organic compounds? Like for example CH2CHCN? Do you draw you connect all of the carbons first or do you like draw parts of the compound separately and then see where they can fit together? I'm pretty lost on how to draw it to be honest. Any help would be good.

I can see where you would be confused, because I am as well. All I know is that on the tests, when there are complex compounds, the test question seems to indicate where the central atoms are and what they are bonded to, and then you could probably go from there.

Usually Carbons are attached to each other, and Hydrogens are attached to carbons, so you end up with a long chain of Carbons with single bonded Hydrogens, or whatever atom you're given, to fulfill octet rules.
