Strength of bonds

Postby Jessica Esparza 2H » Wed Nov 20, 2019 1:40 pm

Which pair of atoms are most tightly bound, HO- or HS-, can anyone help me figuring out the answer?

HO- is more tightly bound because the oxygen has a smaller atomic radius, so the nuclear forces of attraction are much stronger and pull the electrons more tightly. The high electronegativity of oxygen also leads to this conclusion.

There is also a bigger electronegativity difference in the HO bond, which means it is has more ionic character and is therefore stronger.

OH- has a hydrogen bond, which is stronger than the bond of HS-
