SO3 Lewis Structure

Postby AnnikaMittelhauser4E » Fri Dec 06, 2019 5:34 pm

I drew the Lewis structure of SO3 with the S in the middle and double bonded to each oxygen atom. Each oxygen atom then has two lone pairs, and everything has FC = 0.

But, in 6.5, the textbook has the lewis structure of SO3 with S double bonded to one of the oxygens and single bonded to the other two. Why? Isn't that less favorable resonance structure because of the formal charges?

This is because even though S can expand its octect and have 3 double bonds, it rather just have 4 bonds and the oxygen wants the negative charge because of its electronegativity.
