sides
Hi,
Let's say for NO3, does it matter what three sides we put O around N when creating the Lewis Structure? or could it be any side?

Re: sides
Yes I agree, it can be on any side. What matters is that the number of electrons add up to the available valence electrons and that the appropriate bonds are used (single, double, triple).

Re: sides
Yes, I believe that Dr. Lavelle said that we will discuss molecular shapes later but that, as of now, it does not matter.

Re: sides
I don't think the sides matter either. For NO3, the actual 3d shape is trigonal planar with three 120 degree bond angles because of electron repulsion.

Re: sides
Sides does not matter as long as you have the correct number of electrons. I always try to make the lewis structure as symmetrical as possible

Re: sides
I believe as of right now, it does not matter. But as we start to learn about molecular shape and structure it will become more pertinent.

Re: sides
I believe that it doesn’t matter where you place the bonding atoms because lewis structure is a model that we use to hypothesize the location of atoms.

Re: sides
I don't think it matters at all! As long as your structure is accurate the way you put the atoms should not influence anything.
