Resonance structure

Postby IreneSeo3F » Sun Nov 08, 2020 11:30 pm

Hi! In our sapling hw, a question mentions resonance hybrid. Can someone explain what resonance structure is?

Hi! A molecule with resonance structures has more than one valid Lewis structure that can represent that molecule. For example, NO3-, the nitrate ion, has 3 valid structures that can represent it. These are called the resonance structures. The resonance hybrid can be thought of as the average of these resonance structures. I hope this helps!

Hi resonance structures are multiple structures representing the same molecule that maintain the overall charge of the molecule as well as the connectivities.

Hello! Resonance structures simply denote the electronic structure of a molecule which has equally likely structures to occur. When we refer to a resonance hybrid, we are talking about the average or combination of these resonance structures, where the structure is a "hybrid" of the given resonance structures.

Hope this helps!
