Lewis Structure

How do you tell where the odd unpaired electron goes in on a species that is a radical? Say for CH3, because the total electron count should be 7, does the electron remain attached to the carbon if hydrogen can only have one bond? Also what shape would that molecule be?

I think in the case of radicals, the unpaired electron goes with the atom that has remaining empty orbitals. So, in the case of CH3, the unpaired electron ends up with Carbon, because Carbon doesn't have an octet if it is only bonded with 3 Hydrogen atoms and thus has an empty orbital to accommodate the unpaired electron (while all the 1s orbitals of the Hydrogen atoms are already full). Then, I think the repulsion of the electron would create a very slight trigonal pyramidal shape.
