Resonance structures
If I can make multiple correct lewis structures for the same molecule, are they all resonance structures?

Re: Resonance structures
Yes they are. Resonance structure just mean that the position of a certain bond can be different and the molecule is exactly the same either way. For example, in one resonance structure, a double bond could be on the left of the central atom, and on another resonance structure the double bond could be on the right of the central atom. The important thing to remember is that for them to be resonance structures, it must be the exact same molecule.

Re: Resonance structures
Quick note make sure when drawing multiple lewis structures for the same molecule that in contributing structure, the nuclei are in the same positions; only the locations of lone pairs and bonding pairs are changed. If this is all true, then you have a set of resonance structures!

Yes they are. As long as you are only changing the bonds and not the molecular configuration itself.

Re: Resonance structures
Hi! Yes. If each Lewis structure you created for the molecule has the same arrangement of atoms but different arrangements of electrons, they qualify as resonance structures. Hope this helps!

Yes, that is correct. Resonance structures deal with multiple bonds in different equivalent locations while the arrangement of the atom remain the exact same.

Re: Resonance structures
Yes, resonance structures basically refer to the ability for lewis structures to have a bonds in different locations. A hybrid of two or more resonance structures can form a structure known as a resonance hybrid.
