Does Lavelle expect us to know naming? For example, do we need to know what ammonium chloride is? I don't think we learned this in class.

Hi,
In office hours, Dr. Lavelle stated that he will not be assessing us on nomenclature — he will provide the molecular formulas for each molecule in the question.
However, I think it would be in your best interest to memorize common molecular formulas (e.g., carbon dioxide, water, oxygen gas, aluminum chloride, etc.). :)

I think we don't need to know all the namings by now, as I think Dr. Lavelle said that we will be given the molecular formula. However, I think it is better that we start practicing writing out the molecular formula, as we will ultimately need to know the namings (by 14B or later chem classes).

I believe he said he wouldn't test us on naming until after midterm 1, implying that we might need to know it for midterm 2 or the final. It looks like naming shows up in Outline 5: Coordination Compounds and Their Biological Importance.
