How do we determine what is the best lewis structure?

The best Lewis structure of a molecule either is one in which all of the atoms in it are given an octet, or one where the formal charges of each atom is as close to 0 as possible, which negative FCs favoring the more electronegative atoms.

When making a Lewis Structure, the "best" structure is the one that is most stable. This occurs when atoms inside a molecule have an octet (such that they have a noble gas configuration), as well as when there is as little Formal Charge as possible. If there must be formal charge, it is best to have the negative charge on the most electronegative atoms.

Adding on to the previous comments, formal charge = (# of valence electrons) - (# of bonding electrons) - (bonded electrons/2). You want the atoms to have the least formal charge for the structure to be more stable. Additionally, if an electronegative atom like fluorine was to have a positive FC, there is most likely a better resonance structure.

As said previously, the best lewis structure would be the one that is most stable. This could be that the atoms have reached an octet or that the formal charge is closest to 0.

We use the formal charge of the atoms in a lewis structure to determine which lewis structure is best. To find the formal charge of an atom in a structure, you use the formula FC = V - (L + B/2) where V = valence electrons, L = lone pair electrons, and B = bonding pair electrons of an element in the structure. When you determine the formal charges of the elements in a structure, you can tell which is the most favorable because it will be the structure with formal charge values closest to 0.

The "best" lewis structure will have the lowest energy, which is the most stable state. This can be achieved by having little or no formal charges.

Once you've drawn your BASE lewis structure (starting with atoms around central atom, single bond with each then lone pairs to meet octet rule, then matching total valence e's by adding more bonds), you want to find the formal charge of each atom. The BEST overall structure is the one with either a 0 total formal charge or the lowest possible formal charges on each atom/least total formal charge overall.

We find the best lewis structure by finding the most stable structure using the formal charge of each atom. Our goal is to minimize the formal charge on the overall molecule.

We determine the best Lewis structure through resonance structures. The most stable resonance structure has the lowest formal charge. Additionally, the negative charge is on the most electronegative atom.

The best lewis structure is determined based off the stability of the molecule. You can determine which is the most stable structure by calculating the formal charge. The molecule with the lowest formal charge is most stable. If the formal charge appears to be equal between lewis structures, then the most stable structure is the one with the formal charge on the most electronegative atom.
