How to know when atoms form a ring structure

Postby Tony Chen 1F » Thu Dec 02, 2021 10:36 am

When drawing Lewis structure, how do you know if the molecule will form a ring structure? For example when drawing C5H5N, how would you know that it will be a ring structure or not?

I think you would have to play around with different lewis structures and see which structure is the most stable, similar to some of the Achieve problems we have done.

I think one thing I noticed for ring structures are if there are 3 or more carbons in the molecule, I would try forming them in a ring to see if it would work with the rest of the formula.

I also think ring structures can be more commonly seen with organic molecules or molecules seen in biological compounds.
