Oxidation Number

Postby Claire Lewis » Tue Nov 07, 2023 5:19 pm

For the achieve homework question 9, there are questions regarding the oxidation number of an ion, for example the perchlorate ion. Is this the same as the charge of the ion molecule? How does the oxidation number impact the structure of a molecule? Does it have something to do with formal charge?

Hello,
The oxidation number tells how many valence electrons and bonds an atom can form by telling is the number of loss or gained electrons. In this question specifically, Perchlorate ion (CLO4−), the central atom is chlorine and has a +7 oxidation meaning 7 electrons were taken away as electrons are negative.
