Limit to Resonance?

Postby Hannah Kim 3E » Wed Nov 15, 2023 8:43 pm

Is there ever a set amount of resonance structures? Limit? Would the only way to determine them be to draw out each of the possibilities?

yeah the only way to determine resonance structures is to draw them out and just consider the octet rule, conservation of charge, and resonance stability.

As far as I know there is no set number of resonance structures. I hear as we progress in chemistry some of the compounds begin to get very complicated with many resonance structures.

Hello,

I believe there is no set rule but you need to make sure you are drawing the correct structures and making sure that by making all the arrangements you are making it still follows all the rules, for example having a stable net charge or having the same charge throughout all of the structures.

When discussing resonance structures the only way i remember being told to find them was by drawing one structure first and then figuring out the others through reasoning. There was never a set number to resonance structures but i imagine if it was a pretty symmetrical structure its would not exceed the number of bonding regions excluding lone pairs.
