resonance structure stability

Postby andrea guzman 1F » Sun Dec 10, 2023 11:59 am

Would the most stable resonance structure of a molecule be the one where formal charges are opposite each other and cancel out?

Hi! The most stable structure is one where nearly all of the atoms have a formal charge=0. You especially want the central atom to have the formal charge=0 . Formula for formal charge= Valence electrons - lone pair electrons- shared electrons/2. Hope this helps.
