Radicals

How do radicals "damage" DNA by reacting with it? I forgot to write down this part of the lecture in my notes & I just want to know for general knowledge

Radicals will react with an electron from a DNA molecule and oxidize it, but antioxidants (like the ones in blueberries) catch radicals before the can cause damage.

If they damage structures like DNA why are these bonds created. Are they even stable?

Brian, I thinkthat radicals are not stable and thus we don't want them to create a bond with DNA. If they do, they would mess up the molecules structure/shape.
