(NH2)COCH3 Molecule structure

Postby Jimmy Zhou 3D » Tue Oct 25, 2016 12:45 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm not quite sure how to draw this molecule structure. I am unclear as to whether it should have the 2 Cs both bonded to the O in the middle or the two Cs bonded together and the O sticking out from the first C without the Hydrogens.

I believe the O should be sticking out from the first C without hydrogen.
This way you can double bond the O sticking out to the carbon or double bond nitrogen to Carbon for the two resonance

If you put the O between the Carbon, for one resonance you would have to double bond the O to one carbon and the other single bonded to another carbon to make the molecule neutral. However, Oxygen is one of those elements that strictly obeys the octet, so it wouldn't work to place the O between the carbon.
