A Practice Problem from Chapter 3 # 71
Select from teach of the following pairs of lewis structures the one that is likely to make the dominant contribution to a resonance hybrid. Explain your selection.

I did not include the lewis structures that are included but is this problem asking which of the two diagrams is more preferable because of the formal charge. Is that what we are supposed to compare?

Yes, the formal charges are used. If you calculate the formal charges for the atoms in part (a), the first structure of Xe and F is preferred because they are both 0.

The resonance structure in which you can get the most number of FC to equal 0 is the most stable and should be used.
